Last week we had a day when it was 80 degrees here! It’s, as you can imagine, really difficult to plan outfits when the weather is so unpredictable. Your mood is fall, but your body wants to stay cool. During the afternoon, it got so hot; I wished I were wearing shorts and a tank!

I think though, that I’ve styled a look that keeps things current, while still accounting for the fact that the weather still thinks we’re in August. The key here was light, throw-on pieces with fall colors and cuts. I recently bought this bright orange sweater on major sale at Loft (which I happen to go to a lot because there’s one literally a block away from my office), and am totally in love with it. I chose a small rather than extra small for a looser fit, and though it can definitely be utilized as a cardigan to layer, this time, it functioned as a stand-alone top. There’s something so chic about just throwing a sweater on. I made sure to keep the last two buttons unbuttoned to keep with that effortless, cool girl vibe.

The skirt is also from Loft (same shopping trip), and I love the material, which is a wool blend. It’s a very fall skirt, but paired without leggings and with sandals, it works for warmer days as well. It’s a very classic sort of skirt, swingy, but with no frills. It’s a great blank canvas piece in your wardrobe, from which you can start to build an outfit. The sandals are of course, what gives this look that unexpected twist. I didn’t want to wear boots or even my loafers because it would be too stuffy and hot for my feet. This was the perfect breathable option. The gold studs pair nicely with the orange of the sweater.

You can easily transition this into a cold temperature appropriate look. Add some leggings, a pair of loafers or booties, and slip on a coat. Both the sweater and skirt work so well on their own, and this could have been a much more classic outfit with different shoes and accessories. I’m looking forward to it being fall in November so I can start styling these pieces for their true purpose!
