Happy first day of spring!

Hopefully, it will actually start feeling like spring now. Yesterday it did for a hot second, so Greg and I took advantage and shot some season ready looks. He’s off to Germany for business this next week (soooo jealous), so we really wanted to get as much done as we could.

When you can fit in a spring dress into your winter wardrobe

We’ve had a couple of really warm days here in Washington D.C I just had to wear something with a spring vibe. I actually get a lot of use from this dress year round, but it really is beautiful in the springtime. Of course it’s still January, but a girl can dream right?

I love the material of this dress, which is a super light silk cotton mix. It feels incredibly soft against my skin, and so comfortable, I don’t feel constricted in any movement. The sleeves are of course very fun, and sleeves are so in right now. It’s not exactly bell sleeves, but I love how willowy there are. And then there’s the print. I am a sucker for a good print, and I think this one is just bold enough to stand on it’s own but doesn’t overpower.

And that’s really key when pairing this dress with other pieces. It should stand as a stand alone piece, but shoes, outerwear, and accessories can still be interesting without being out of place I decided to go with black lace-up boots and my trusty leather jacket.

Happy Friday to everyone! Hope you all have fun plans for the upcoming weekend!

Sweater Dresses and Raincoat Details

Good morning all! It is inauguration day. I thought about not watching, but then I realized I couldn’t just stick my head in the sand. I have to be an active participant. I have to at least watch and take notes and make sure that I am aware, so I can stand up when needed and fight for what I believe. I’m planning on going to the Women’s March tomorrow, and I will have an update on the blog next week.

I wore this super easy look during a rainy day last week. This sweater dress literally takes zero effort, but still looks so good. I always pull it out when I’m stumped on an outfit, or when I need something quick that I know will still look good. This time I’ve decided to let the dress speak for itself and not add too many accessories, but I actually also really love it belted. I’ve tried thin belts and thick ones, and both look good. As you may have noticed, with more classics and basics, I tend to gravitate towards black, but I absolutely love this maroon colors. I’m trying to branch out a little and get more into beiges and reds, which really do pair with pretty much anything.

Though the dress checks off both the cute and comfortable requirements, the raincoat is the true star of this look. I love, love, the ruffled details in the back! It’s so feminine, and so pretty, but still not over the top. I think that because it’s this beautiful blue color, it can get away with more girly accents; if it were pink, it would be too much. With so much rain that we’ve been having here in D.C. (unfortunately not cold enough to snow), a stylish raincoat is a must!

I hope everyone has a great weekend! More looks coming your way next week! And don’t forget that you can get frequent outfit inspiration from my Instagram, whitesilkblackleather.

I’m sorry I haven’t written in a bit, Thanksgiving weekend was long and super busy! I went to see my family back in Minnesota. I’m home now and ready to style, post, and talk about more outfits than ever!

Happy December 1st, which is by far my most favorite month of the year! I am sure that I’m not the only one who feels this way, but there’s something just so special about the holiday season. Especially the clothes! There’s so many fun clothes to wear, from sparkly dresses, to velvet anything, to cozy luxe sweater dress.

Today’s post is featuring the most incredible sweater dress I picked up at a Black Friday sale last week. I saw it on the rack and I just couldn’t resist! 50% off! What I really love about this piece is how luxe and classic it looks, but also there’s so many fun details. The length is unexpected, and really lets the dress take center stage. The slit is sexy, but not too much. And my favorite detail, the sleeves. Oh, how I adore these sleeves! Bell sleeves have been so in recently, and this a more classic take on the trend.

The rest of the look is fairly basic. Classic black bag with plenty of room for essentials, sheer black tights and chunky boots to keep warm, and of course my sunnies. I just feel so luxurious wearing this sweater dress, and am so excited to keep it on rotation all winter long! I would style a versatile piece like this anywhere from the office to a lunch to a cozy red wine filled dinner.

Stay tuned for more looks next week and don’t forget to follow me on my Instagram, WhiteSilkBlackLeather, in the meantime!

The Will to Fight

It has truly been a tumultuous week. But in all our anger and despair, we must find love. Now more than ever, is the time to be strong and to fight.

I thought I was going to be doing a much different post. I thought I was going to be bubbly with joy and go on and on about how proud I was and how the white in this shoot against the backdrop of the U.S Capitol represents one of the biggest triumphs in the suffragist and women’s rights movement. But I’m not.

And I’ve taken a couple days to think about it, and though I am far from being ok, I am more determined than I have ever been to be a person who sparks change. A person that is kind, and loving, and open. A person who speaks up when something is wrong, and a person who accepts other people. I now have a stronger will and a longer endurance. We now all must. In the words of Hillary Clinton, “it is always worth it to fight for what is right.”

Boho meets Structure

I am very excited about this black cashmere cardigan! From the length, to the belt, to the cashmere, I’m absolutely in love with it. It might be one of the most versatile new pieces in my wardrobe and I can’t wait to style it in so many different ways.

I went for a more boho-meets-structure vibe for this look. I started with a cashmere blend gray cami, with lace detailing, under a flowy, silky light pink skirt with a flower pattern. Very bohemian on it’s own. Once I added the cardigan, though it’s very soft and not overpowering, it pulled everything together.

I had debated what shoes to go with to complete the outfit, and I decided on these chunky boots with buckles because not only do they add tons of edge, but they also toughen up a mostly very feminine look. I love contrasts like that, and am always trying to incorporate opposing pieces in the same look. I don’t think style should ever fit into one label, and I highly encourage experimenting. Happy styling!
