how to wear sparkle to the office

I’ve decided to take on a project with my closet and that project is to wear every piece in my wardrobe; if I can’t bring myself to wear something, it has to go. The catch is that I’m going in order of pieces hung up, which has really started to get the creative juices flowing. No matter the day, if it’s next it has to be incorporated. The goal is to rediscover my clothes, and make room for new loves.

All-American Classics

Sometimes you just can’t beat a classic, All-American look. And with quality, timeless pieces, the whole outfit is just easy, elegant, for lack of a better word, a classic.

Mom and I had a really great day shopping in Friendship Heights yesterday, a place with many high end shops like Saks, Neimans, and Bloomingdales. I love walking through dreamy designer handbags, swoon worthy shoes, and trying new fragrances (like the Chanel collection- 1932 is so good, so unique!). We stumbled upon a BCBGMaxaria store that was closing and selling everything for up to 80%. I picked up these gorgeous red sandals (got so lucky with this sale!) that I’m so excited to style!

Polished with a twist

Photography: Greg Beuning

Wearing: Top- Express, Cardigan- Theory, Pants- Catherine Malandrino, Boots- Via Spiga

This is a take on a really polished look, but with a fun printed twist. I always like to take sophistication up a notch. Professional does not mean frumpy! That has always been my mantra, and I’ve tried to demonstrate this by pairing classic pieces in flattering modern cuts, and adding just a pop of fun.

I have absolutely in love with this cashmere cardigan this season. Cashmere is the ultimate luxe fabric, and it’s well worth the investment. It feels so soft, and I love the length of this one, as well as the belt. I’ve linked to a similar one here (on sale!) and here (with lace hem detailing!). It pairs perfectly with this bright top. I’m all about the slight peplum hem. Since the top frays out, I decided on slim fitting pants. These are current, but don’t feel overly trendy. I like this black pair, but also this pair in a different neutral. A look like this is all about balance. Since the top and cardigan are flowy and pull away from the body, it’s important to have structure down below.

No matter where you work, there is a lot of value in looking good. Even if you’re just sitting in a cube, making an effort to look put together will always make you feel more productive and on top of things. When you look good, you feel good!

Silk, Leather, Suede

I have been waiting to break out my All Saints leather jacket for weeks now, and finally the time has come. This is my favorite piece of outerwear that I own right now, and it’s going into its third season. It’s just such a staple piece in my wardrobe, and worth the investment.

A great piece like a leather jacket will never go out of style, is incredibly versatile, and functional too. This one is a bit more fitted, and a faded black. I love the quilt details on the shoulders and the zippers and buckles on the sleeves. It’s a great item for a more casual look, a work look, or a night out. And it brings so much edge, that effortless, cool girl vibe to pretty much any outfit.

Here I’ve paired it with a bit of a bold piece, a Marc by Marc Jacobs maxi dress with a side slit and a loud colorful splatter print. In the summer I’m able to wear this dress on its own with just a pair of black sandals, but I wanted to up the ante when transitioning into fall. I think that a summer piece like this dress, should be worn in the fall as well, because when paired with the correct complements, we can get the most out of our clothes. Though the leather and the maxi both have equal amounts of characters, I feel like they work really nicely together. The flowy silk softens the toughness of the leather.

To finish off, I went with my current favorite pair of boots, heeled suede booties with gold buckle side detailing. It’s a bit of an unexpected touch to add boots to a maxi, but I actually love this look. It makes a traditionally summer dress appropriate for fall. I enjoy the mix of materials in this outfit, silk, leather, and suede. Because the boots and jacket are black, it’s ok for the dress to be loud. But also, both the jacket and boots have great details that add individualized character. This might be one of the best fall looks I’ve styled yet!

Blues and Grays

I feel as though this look is so simple and soft, just a great mix of feminine details and minimalism. The powder blue skirt is a true staple in my closet. I did not expect to get as much wear out of it as I do, but I find that I can make it work with almost anything. It’s becoming a great non-neutral, neutral. I paired the skirt with a gray cashmere cami, cardigan set. Styling these together is a sure win, but I’ve worn each piece separately as well. I love when you can have a pre-set look, but also creative license for many variations. The beautiful lace details on the top of the both the cami and the cardigan are very feminine and provide the interest for this look.

These shoes are Alex & Alex, which is a brand exclusively sold on Gilt. As I’ve mentioned in a previous post (link to post), I cannot rave enough about this app. Such awesome designers at even more awesome prices. I love finding my next statement piece or a new classic at Gilt. These sandals have been really great to me this summer. They’re black, as most of my everyday shoes tend to be, with studs on the straps. I love the studs! They add such a luxe edge to a pair of shoes that are so easy to just slip on and wear all day. I also want to mention that they are extremely comfortable.

Sometimes an outfit doesn’t have to go all out to be amazing. You just need some quality, classic pieces and a little detail to create a look that’s totally chic. I wore this to my office job, but could see myself wearing this out to lunch or just running errands.

Until next time!
